When you run the Setup program with the /forestprep switch in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server or in Exchange Server 2003, Setup is not successful. You receive the following error message:

Setup failed while installing sub-component Microsoft Exchange Organization-Level Container Object with error code 0xC1037AE6 (please consult the installation logs for a detailed description). You may cancel the installation or try the failed step again.

If you click Retry, you receive the following error message:

Setup failed while Configuring administrative rights (error 0xC1037AE6: Extending the schema in the Active Directory failed. Please consult the following error log: %s\LDIF.ERR.)

You may also experience an error when you run the Active Directory Connector (ADC) setup program after running Exchange Setup with the /forestprep switch. The ADC setup program may fail. You may receive the following error message on the local computer:

Error code 0XC1037AE6 (31642): Extending the schema in the Active Directory failed. Please consult the error log LDIF.ERR in your TEMP directory.

This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:

  • File names of the 8.3 type were disabled on the NTFS file system partition.
  • An environment variable for the administrator or user who is running Setup has a path that has a space in it.

Change the Temp and Tmp user variables to paths that do not include spaces. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Environment Variables.
  3. Click Edit to change the user variables to paths that do not include spaces.
  4. Rerun Setup with the /forestprep switch.

To quickly view your user Environment Variables, follow these steps:

  1. At a command prompt, type SET.
  2. Check your path for the Temp and Tmp variables. For example, a path that contains a space may look similar to the following:
    TEMP=C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\Local Settings\Temp\1
This problem does not occur if the path does not contain a space, or if 8.3 file names are enabled.

When this problem occurs, the Exchange Server Setup Progress.log file shows the following:
